Janovi vinogradi Winery near Belgrade – Steps towards organic production with a view as if in Tuscany (PHOTO, VIDEO)

The village of Parcani in the Belgrade municipality of Sopot is where the Janovi vinogradi Winery is located, whose wines are made from the usual grape varieties for premium wines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. However, there is also a Muscat Ottonel variety of a special clone, which produces a smaller, but exceptionally high-quality crop, because it is well suited for the Avala-Kosmai vineyards. The selection is rounded off by Smederevka, a variety from the Belgrade region, which produces light summer citrus wines.

The owner of the winery, Bojan Vukmirica, has decided on organic production, so the winery is currently in the process of conversion. This period lasts three years, and the winegrower undertakes, under a contract with the certification house, to comply with the prescribed principles and practices of organic production as well as legal regulations. At the end of that period, the right to certify and declare organic grapes is acquired, which is a requirement for the production of declared organic wine.

– The process of conversion to organic production is not possible if you do not have the knowledge and experience in the fields of viticulture, conservation and winemaking. We can only talk about organic production in the context of sustainability in a broader sense. From my experience, grapes obtained from an organic vineyard are a prerequisite for obtaining wine with the certain characteristics that I desire. It was a logical step, not the need to create additional value for the final product – Vukmirica points out for eKapija.



He adds that, with enough care, all varieties can be grown organically with the use of agents from the list of those approved for use in organic production.

– Although, newly created varieties obtained by crossing Vinifera varieties that produce noble wines and other varieties from the Vitis genus that provide resistance to diseases may be a more suitable choice, because they require fewer treatments – the interviewee notes.

He believes that the organic wine market is in constant development, but that it will always represent a niche market – “that's where it belongs.”

– It has been confirmed in practice that producers of natural, biodynamic and organic wines have better opportunities in markets where the wine culture is more developed, and these are also the markets of Western countries.
How did the winery get its name?


The Janovi vinogradi Winery, in addition to the blend of red varieties called “60/40”, will soon introduce the wine “Tri grozda” to the market, which has a small proportion of the Prokupac variety from a 70-year-old vineyard.

– The wine “MO selekcija”, which has 95% Muscat Ottonel and 5% Smederevka, is the absolute favorite of all customers. The wine is mineral, with a full flavor, and due to the presence of noble botrytis, the scent of orange peel can also be felt – says Vukmirica.

He also adds that the temperature differences between day and night in the Avala-Kosmaj region help the preservation of the acids in the grapes, which are necessary for obtaining fresh mineral wines.

All those who want to see the difference between small and large wineries, to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while and enjoy the nature and top wines, can do so in this winery.

– For now, we receive smaller groups of wine enthusiasts during the summer months. The place where the winery is located is perfect for wine tourism, because it is one of the closest ones to Belgrade, and the greenery and the view are like being in Tuscany – describes our interviewee.

As he adds, the promotion of wine culture in the nature and socializing with a glass of quality wine is what they have successfully done in the past years, and what they plan to continue doing.
