Belgrade Aquarium to have rooftop garden and round square – Here’s what the future attraction in Usce will look like (PHOTO)

The urban planning and architectural solution for the Usce zone with the Friendship Park area defines the positions of the Natural History Museum, the 21st Century Art Museum, the Aquarium and the Panoramic Wheel along the Main Alley. The architectural studio Mitarh, whose design won the architectural and urban planning contest, has published the visualizations of the future Aquarium on its Instagram profile.

As they say, the preliminary design and the further development of the Aquarium envisage a facility on two levels. The commercial features are on the level -1.50, whereas the administrative part is planned for the level +3.00. Access to the facility and the outlets is planned at the cote -1.50 and directly linked with the square.

In terms of its forms, it is designed as an earthen embankment (rooftop garden) with a superimposed round square, the central point of public gatherings, which introduces the visitors to the facility of the Aquarium, located beneath the embankment.

The greened roof of the dug-in facility is a result of the authors’ wish for the new facility to fully fit into the existing green environment in the location, as well as the obligation of complying with the contest design.

The team of authors consists of Branislav Mitrovic, Dusan Grujovic, Uros Majstorovic and Sahret Hajdarpasic.

According to the team that won the urban-architectural contest for the area of the Friendship Park-Usce, organized by the Belgrade Association of Architects, the new Natural History Museum building will be located between the Palace of Serbia and the Great War Island, and the aquarium will be in its extension in the direction toward Zemun.

The plan is for the new museum building and the aquarium to be underground, except that their facades, facing the Great War Island, will be open, that is, made of glass.

The aquarium building will spread on 5,000 m2 and be, according to representatives of the city authorities, “a true tourism attraction, which will entertain, but also educate the visitors. The youngest ones, but also the older ones, will be able to learn about the underwater world and the living organisms in it.”

Let us remind that, recently, the Ministry of Finance announced the first tender which concerned the announced construction of the big aquarium in Usce. In the prior notice, it is said that the tender for the management of the project, the performance of expert supervision and performance of the job of the Construction Manager (FIDIC-approved engineer) on the construction of the aquarium with side features will be opened on December 25. The value of the job has been estimated at close to RSD 156 million.
