Popovic: I expect the best price of Russian gas for Serbia

In the spring of next year, an agreement between the presidents of Serbia and Russia about an even more favorable price of Russian gas for Serbia for a period of three to seven years is expected, stated the minister without a portfolio in charge of international economic cooperation and the field of the social position of the church in the country and abroad, Nenad Popovic.

– I expect the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, to make an agreement in the spring for the next three, five, or seven years, for an even better price of gas for the citizens of Serbia – Popovic said for the Politika daily.

Popovic, who is also a co-president of the Serbian-Russian Intergovernmental Committee for Trade, Economic and Science-Technological Cooperation, reminded that Serbia had the lowest price of Russian gas in Europe and that that was down to an agreement between the presidents Vucic and Putin.

– That’s how it’s been in the past 10 years, and I am sure that it will be the same, perhaps even better, next year as well – he said.

He pointed out that the Russian gas and the price at which Serbia was buying it incited the economic growth of the country and reminded that foreign investors sought the best roads, the best prices of gas and electricity, which Serbia enabled for them, which was why 70% of foreign investments in the Western Balkans came to Serbia.

Popovic said that, after a three-year halt, the work of the intergovernmental committee had been activated and that it had been decided for the cooperation to intensify.

– He pointed out that the decisions of the committee helped resolve the current problems and cited as an example the solving of the logistics problem, that is, truck transport of goods from Serbia to Russia, after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.

– This mechanism has enabled our goods to arrive to Russia and vice versa much more quickly, but we are also solving problems for companies which are experiencing difficulties due to the sanctions – he said.

Popovic expects the economic exchange of the two countries to reach the levels from 2022, when it amounted to USD 4.3 billion, Politika reports.
