Metro all the way to the airport! - A new solution sought for the 3rd line worth EUR 25.2 million, two more extensions of the original route planned

The third line of the Belgrade metro, in addition to the previous plan, could also reach Nikola Tesla Airport. This was stated in the project assignment for the preparation of project-technical documentation - the justification study with the conceptual design and with the environmental impact assessment study for line 3 of the Belgrade metro, ordered by PUC Belgrade metro and train.

As stated in the tender worth RSD 2.95 billion (EUR 25.2 million), the extension of line 3 of the future metro has been planned.

- The two lines proposed by the General Metro Project are the basis of the future metro system. However, only with the third line can this system meet the transport requirements of the city of Belgrade - the documentation says.

We remind our readers that, as part of the conceptual solution from 2021 developed by the Egis Rail company, the route of the third metro line from Novi Belgrade to Banjica, should be 20.8 km long with 22 stations: Surcinska, Blok 61, Gandijeva, IMT, Blok 42, Arena, Usce, Pristaniste, Trg Republike, National Assembly, Manjez, Clinical Center, Belgrade Center, Autokomanda, Vitanovacka, TC Stadium, Brace Jerkovic, Stepe Stepanovic, Trosarina, Banjica, Oslobodjenja. The crossing of line 3 with line 1 is planned at Trg republike, whereas the crossing with line 2 is planned at Park Manjez station and Arena station.

For the purposes of further and more detailed analysis of the route of line 3, as per the project terms of reference, the design and technical documentation must also include the connection of line 3 of the metro with the BG train at the railway stations Novi Beograd (Ulica Antifasisticke borbe) and Vuk's monument, connection with line 2 at metro station Arena, then near the station Grcica Milenka/Vojislava Ilica/Ustanicka, connecting with line 1 at Trg republike.

Also, the new solution should handle possible extensions:

• Connection with line 2 in the joint depot in Bezanija,
• Extension to Nikola Tesla Airport,
• Extension to Kumodraz in the direction of the future BIO4 campus at the Faculty of Pharmacy;
• Extension from Banjica to the settlements Kanarevo brdo, Miljakovac and Rakovica,

The development of project-technical documentation for line 3, as mentioned, should be processed in two stages, so that the first one includes the part of Bezanija and Novi Beograd with the extension to the airport (left bank of the Sava River), and the second stage covers the part from Novi Beograd to Banjica and the BIO4 campus , as well as towards Miljakovac and Rakovica (right bank of the Sava river).

The designer will create multiple solutions for the Metro Line 3 route (minimum is three) with elements of the general project, and will also be required to forecast the number of passengers on Line 3 and carry out an expertise on the impact of this line on water sources in Novi Beograd.
