The works on the reconstruction and modernization of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railroad and the bypass railroad around Nis will cost EUR 430 million, of which EUR 108 million is a gift from the EU, and they should be completed by the end of 2027, said the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic.

– For Serbia, it will be a great success when trains on this railroad move at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour, instead of the current average of 40 kilometers – said Vucic while visiting the works on the Pirot-Sukovo railroad section.

On that section, around 7.5 kilometers long, the works began in November last year, and they are financed with a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), money from the budget of Serbia, as well as a donation from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).

Vucic told the head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret, who visited the works together with him, that it would be good if EU expanded the financial assistance for the reconstruction of a part of the railroad on the Valjevo-Vrbnica section.

The Nis-Dimitrovgrad railroad is 86 kilometers long, and the agreed job completion deadline is three and a half years. The main contractor is the consortium led by the Bulgarian company Trace.
