Greece Officially Part of Project of Fast Railroad from Budapest Through Belgrade to Athens – Railroad in That Country Already Mostly Finished

Since yesterday, Greece is part of the project of the fast railroad from Budapest to Athens, via Belgrade, following the agreement between the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the prime minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, pointed out the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic.

The two-track railroad from Athens to Thessaloniki for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour has already been built.

– Greece is part of the project of the construction of the fast railroad from Budapest to Athens, via Novi Sad, Belgrade, Nis, Skopje and Thessaloniki. The length of this fast railroad will be 1,512 kilometers. It will stretch for 166 kilometers through Hungary, 572 kilometers through Serbia, 213 kilometers through North Macedonia and 561 kilometers through Greece – said Vesic.

As he added, Belgrade will be the host of the meeting between the ministers of transport from Hungary, North Macedonia and Greece, at which all the details of this project will be specified.


The first section of the fast railroads for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour, between Belgrade and Novi Sad, opened in March 2022, and as per the announcement, the section from Novi Sad to Subotica should be put into operation in the spring of next year. The works on the longest section, the one from Belgrade to Nis, are yet to begin. The construction of the first section, counting the ceremony marking the beginning of the works, took five years.
