Each Year, 247,000 Tons of Food Gets Thrown Away in Serbia

Could we have planned more carefully how much food to prepare and what to do with the leftovers? The data about the quantity of the food we waste are astonishing. One third of the food produced in the world ends up being thrown away. Each year, 247,000 tons of food is thrown away in Serbia, which, observed on a daily level, is as much as 676 tons, as shown by an analysis of the first official survey about food wasting in Serbia.

– A lot of food ends up being thrown away in Serbia. Our aim and focus is to gather as much food as possible and help the socially vulnerable populace in Serbia. Also, our aim is to gather as many companies as possible and to help our fellow citizens – said Srdjan Budimcic of the Food Bank of Vojvodina.

An average Serbian family of four “throws away” around RSD 40,000 a year.

– A law on the VAT deduction would motivate companies and citizens to donate the existing surplus in a meaningful way, to food banks. When we get surplus food, with our partner associations, we distribute it to the socially vulnerable populace – said Budimcic.

Food banks must not cooperate with individuals, but only with associations and companies, due to product guarantees.
