City Urban Planner and Other Experts to Decide on Look of Facades and Storefronts in the Future

The City Assembly of Belgrade is holding a session today, and in addition to the city budget revision, planning documents and documents which concern public transport, the agenda features the decision which concerns the development of storefronts and neglected facades. As the mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Sapic, clarified on TV K1, essentially, an expert body, headed by the main city architect (currently Marko Stojcic), will decide what to develop and how.

– There are facilities which truly make certain parts of the city uglier. Standards are different in different parts of the city, but people who are educated for it will decide on it. There will be no big demands, just to adapt everything to its purpose, to have a storefront, for example, and not an unfinished shop – Sapic emphasized.

The appearance and the state of storefronts have not been in the city’s focus, but facades have. For years now, the project of the reconstruction of facades in protected cultural-historical wholes, that is, on buildings protected by the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade, has been carried out in phases. Some of the biggest such projects were the reconstructions of facades in Karadjordjeva, Kralja Petra, Zeleni Venac and Brankova streets. Occasionally, certain facades are also renewed by city municipalities in their territories, but in the capital of Serbia, there are still plenty of facades which are crumbling and from which decorative and other elements frequently fall off.
