The Republic Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments has discovered archaeological remains hidden by high shrubbery for decades in the area of the archaeology site Justiniana Prima near Lebane – remains of an aqueduct and two dams, as well as a villa urbana, a principia and a part of the ramparts of the Lower City with a tower. These valuable remains, as announced by the Ministry of Culture, were discovered in the first year of the realization of the capital project “Conservation, Restoration and Presentation of the Archaeology Site Justiniana Prima”.

The columns of the aqueduct at the dam on the river Caricinska were preserved 20 years ago, whereas the location of Kale in the settlement of Zlata has never been explored or documented. The dam in the village of Zlata was cleaned last month for the first time after four decades, during which it was covered by a thick forest. The plan is for it to be surveyed in the coming days and for the institute to prepare a proposition of the decision on the legal protection of this protected part of the dam by the end of the year, the Ministry of Culture specifies.

This, as pointed out, is one of the first in the range of activities within the preparation for the entry of Justiniana Prima to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
