City Becomes Owner of South Ramparts of Novi Pazar Fortress – Reconstruction Soon

The south ramparts of the Novi Pazar Fortress (Bezistan) are now owned by the city and the works on its restoration and repair will begin soon, the local self-government announced.

Following the meeting with the director of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Dubravka Djukanovic, the mayor of Novi Pazar, Nihat Bisevac, stated that the City Park would become “an outdoor museum with a range of cultural attractions.”

– In cooperation with the Republic Institute and with the support of the ministries of culture and tourism, as well as the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the project of the construction of Dzephana will be realized, and the restoration of Bezistan is on the horizon. The south ramparts of the fortress – Bezistan are now owned by the city and the urgent repair will become soon – said Bisevac.

Djukanovic said that Dzephana and Bezistan were just some of the examples of joint efforts toward the preservation of the cultural legacy.

The crumbling of Bezistan has been going on for years, and although the Republic Construction Inspection banned the use of the hospitality facility on it due to the very poor state of the walls of the bastion in 2018, the facility continued working without a problem.

The Novi Pazar Fortress, a cultural monument of remarkable importance, is a medieval Turkish fortification, which was raised in mid-15th century by one of the most famous Ottoman military leaders, Isa-Beg Ishakovic.
