Electronic gate at Belgrade's airport - Border crossing without direct control by border police

An electronic gate (e-gate), the latest technology that allows faster border crossing without the direct control by the border police, has been put in operation at Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade.

All citizens of Serbia who have biometric passports issued after 31 December 2009 will be able to cross the e-gate at the Belgrade airport.

The system automatically checks whether the citizen is on any list of local and Interpol arrest warrants and whether the data in the passport are original.

Only two airports in Europe have this kind of device – Paris Airport Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt Airport, but they are not, like the one in Belgrade, completely connected to the system of border police.

The police expect the use of the new control system to raise the level of security at the border crossing, accelerate procedures, and reduce queues.

The system can currently be used only by the citizens of Serbia, but its application will be expanded in the future.

Serbia introduced so-called second generation of biometric passports on December 1, 2009. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Interior of Serbia, 1.5m citizens have new passports.

The e-gate has been donated to Serbia by German company Milbauer.
