“Made in Serbia” Tag Mandatory for Local Meat from April 1

“Made in Serbia” is a tag which meat and meat products of local origin will have to start carrying in a few days. Freshness is very important when it comes to meat and that is why the information that the meat has not been transported across too many kilometers is very important, said Branislav Raketic of the Ministry of Agriculture.

There’s plenty of talk in the public whether the meat we buy is produced in Serbia or whether it has arrived to the market from abroad. From the beginning of April, this dilemma should disappear, because locally produced meat will carry a special tag in stores.

Branislav Raketic of the Ministry of Agriculture said that the amendments to the rulebook on the declaration had been adopted in early March. This means that the origin of meat coming from Serbia is additionally emphasized and that meat products which contain more than 50% meat are specially tagged.

– We want to help our local industry. This kind of information is very important for the consumer. Research shows that the price is the most important, and then the origin of the production – Raketic said.

According to him, the use of the “Made in Serbia” tag in retail stores will be mandatory.

– Due to time constrains, we haven’t changed the packaging. Instead, the tags should be displayed in clearly visible spots. I am sure that retail chains will want to make that tag as visible as possible – Raketic said.

He added that freshness was very important for meat and that, therefore, “the information that the meat has not been transported across too many kilometers is very important”.

– GMOs are banned here – he pointed out and noted that he believed that the “Made in Serbia” tag would contribute to an increased sale of goods.

He said that the Serbian meat industry deserved to be made into a brand.

He also announced that there would be big changes in the way food is declared and that milk would be encompassed in the next period.

From the beginning of April, the “Made in Serbia” tag will be displayed in visible places right next to the displayed meat or meat products, along with the price, and it will have to be at least as large as the price tag.
