Serbia one of founder countries of International Anti-Corruption Academy

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated today in Vienna that it is a very significant fact that Serbia is one of the founding countries of the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) and that the IACA will help advance the fight against organized crime.

Dacic, who is taking part in the IACA founding conference in Vienna, emphasized that the establishment of the IACA was supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Interpol.

The opening of the IACA is an important step for capacity building in the fight against corruption, he remarked.

Various countries are expected to join the IACA by the end of this year. The Academy will start working next year, explained the Minister.

Member countries will exchange experience and organise various training courses for police and judiciary personnel, he noted.

The Serbian delegation which is participating in the conference includes State Secretary at the Ministry of Justice Slobodan Homen, Director of Serbia’s Anti-Corruption Agency Zorana Markovic, Director of the Judiciary Academy Nenad Vujic and representatives of other state bodies for the fight against corruption, outlined Dacic.

Serbia was among the initiators of the IACA, recalled Dacic, adding that representatives from Serbia and UNODC talked about opening a regional office of the IACA in Belgrade last year.

The opening of the regional office in Belgrade will be an affirmation of Serbia’s efforts to prevent narcotics smuggling, corruption and organised crime. Last year more cases of corruption were brought to light than in the previous five years, a National Strategy for combating corruption was adopted and the Anti-Corruption Agency was established, underlined Dacic.

Dacic also talked about the effectiveness of confiscating assets obtained through crime, specifying that the total value of assets confiscated so far stands at €200 million, which is a huge step forward compared to progress made in previous years.

More than 30 ministers from several countries are taking part in the IACA founding conference in Vienna. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is also attending the conference.
