Mass Production and Sale of Sophia Robot to Start This Year

When Sophia, a humanoid robot, debuted in 2016, it was the only one of its kind. She had a very lifelike appearance and behavior for a robot, and her ability to interact with people was unlike anything previously seen in any kind of machine.

Since then, Sophia has held speeches worldwide (in several languages), been interviewed on countless TV shows and even been given the title of a United Nations citizen (as the first non-human being).

Today, she is, without a doubt, the most famous robot in the world, but is not to remain unique for long. Her creator, Hanson Robotics, announces plans to start a mass production of the model this year – so as to help the world deal with the pandemic.

Considering the current situation, Hanson Robotics believes that now is the right moment to make Sophia available to the masses.

– The world of COVID-19 is going to need more and more automation to keep people safe – founder and chief executive David Hanson told Reuters.

– Social robots like me can take care of the sick or elderly I can help communicate, give therapy and provide social stimulation, even in difficult situations – Sophia says as she conducts a tour of her lab in Hong Kong, Reuters adds.
