"Pannonian Door" is the terminal in Sremska Mitrovica where the trains with containers loaded with raw materials for companies in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria will be arriving from Rijeka's harbor starting from March 2010. The same route, but in the opposite direction, will be used for transportation of containers loaded with ready-made products to Rijeka.
Total of 5,000 square meters of public customs warehouse in Sremska Mitrovica's port "Leget" and another 15,000 square meters of the warehouse on the grounds of the port have already been provided for that purpose. Now it is the time for reconstruction of industrial gage from railway station Sremska Mitrovica to the future container terminal. About 5m RSD will be invested only in reconstruction of the rail of port "Leget". The cranes with the capacity of over 35 tons will be installed for the needs of handling the containers.
In the first phase, 15,000 square meters of space for unloading and handling the containers will be paved in the Sava's port "Leget", while the second phase will include paving of another 50,000 square meters. The containers will be delivered by trucks from Sremska Mitrovica to the final destinations, while transportation by the Sava river is also possible.
– We will invest about 2m EUR in the first phase of organization of the container terminal and employ 25 workers. Already in March 2010, three train compositions with containers from Rijeka will be arriving here every week. Once the second phase of the works is finished, trains will be arriving every day because over 60% of containers that reach Rijeka's harbor are intended for the market of Serbia, Slavonia, part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. The opening of "Pannonian Door" will make the transportation of goods on the Rijeka-Sremska Mitrovica route half cheaper than by trucks. Complete investment in the terminal will reach the amount of 5m EUR – Zoran Nešić, the CEO of port "Leget", told "Politika" and pointed out that Customs Office Sremska Mitrovica was also situated in the port, so that it would be used for clearing the goods from the containers.
