Štefan File - new EU Enlargement Commissar

Štefan File, the Czech Minister of European Affairs, will take the position of the EU Enlargement Commissar from Oli Rehn in the new European Commission, of which structure was announced yesterday by Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the Commission. Mr. Barroso said that the European Commission "has European programme and it now has European team".

- Based on the appointment by countries members, I have decided to form a collegium of commissars who will be able to produce fresh ideas and cope with the biggest challenges that Europe is facing today - said he.

Oli Rehn, former EU Enlargement Commissar, has got the position of the EU Commissar for Economic and Monetary Issues, which means that his role will be to supervise the efforts that are invested in revival of European economy. This position was earlier assumed by Joaquin Almuna from Spain, who will now become the EU Commissar for Competition, while Michelle Barnier will be appointed as the Commissar for Internal Market who will be in charge of financial services and agencies. Karel de Gucht from Belgium, a representative of the right center, will be the Commissar for Trade, while the list of candidates for influential executive functions in the Commission is still in making.

The main task of Barroso's new 27-member team will be, according to his words, to revive the economic development after the global financial crisis, and the team is expected to assume its duties in February because it must first be accepted by the European Parliament, which will be discussing that issue in January.

Professional diplomat and former communist

Štefan File from Czech Republic, who will be the new EU Enlargement Commissar, is a professional diplomat. He was born on May 24, 1962, in Sokolovo in Czech Republic, and he was a Slovakian prior to his 15th birthday. He is currently the Minister of European Affairs in the technical government led by Prime Minister Jan Fischer. Mr. File was a student at the University in Prague and the Moscow Institute of International Relations. In the period between 1982 and 1989, he was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He was also the Ambassador of Czech Republic to Lithuania, Great Britain and NATO.
