HIV vaccine found?

A research group within the US Army and Thai health authorities have announced that they produced an experimental vaccine, the first ever that can prevent HIV infection, the virus that leads to AIDS, to a significant extent.

US scientists and Thai officials said at the press conference that that vaccine lowered the risk of HIV infection by 31.2 per cent.

The trial of the vaccine, which was tested on over 16,000 HIV-negative men and women aged from 18 to 30 in two of Thai provinces, began in October 2003.

Scientists and public health officials said that the result was modest but it provided significant encouragement that immunisation against HIV/Aids was possible.

New vaccine comprises a combination of two previously tested vaccine candidates that did not prove to be effective.
