Construction of new Sava bridge planned for 2020 – We present the details of the preliminary project

The construction of the new bridge on the Sava should begin in 2020, the Institute of Transportation CIP, which prepared the preliminary design, told eKapija. It is likely that the Old Sava Bridge will be moved before the new one is built, and citizens of Belgrade will vote for one of the two options for moving the old bridge.

– The contest took place in 2017 and we won. The next phase of the project followed, which is the preparation of the preliminary design, which was handed over to the Review Commission of the Republic of Serbia on June 30, 2019, in line with the agreement. Once the commission approves the preliminary project, we will start preparing the main project, that is, the project for the construction permit and the execution of works. The plan is for the contractor to be selected in late 2019 and for it to prepare the project and start building in early 2020 – Dejan Srejic, the leading engineering designer at CIP and one of the authors of the preliminary design, told eKapija.

Looking at the new bridge design from the aspect of the bridges located nearby, as said in the explanation of the project, construction elements which can be connected visually with other bridges on the Sava can be seen.

– Keeping this in mind, it can be concluded that the new bridge will fit well with the existing bridges. However, aside from the elements of the structure which are shaped so as to fit with the other bridges, the new bridge also has a unique esthetic. The main contribution to its esthetic is the introduction of asymmetry, that is, the implementation of arcs of different heights. By introducing a height difference of 6 meters, the bridge has been given a personal stamp, making it different from standard solutions – the explanation says.

Function – traffic

The traffic profile of the bridge entails two driving lanes 6.5 meters wide each, a double-track tram-subway corridor in the middle of the profile, with the minimum width of 8 meters and sidewalks on both sides of 3.3 m each, including one-way cycling lanes. Cascading structures will be formed on the outside of the pedestrian-cycling lanes, namely, lookouts with a view to the river and the city, where pedestrians and cyclists can rest, the project says.


Description of the construction

Arcs

The new bridge is a double steel arc with a continual tie at a constant static altitude. The total length of the bridge is 420 m, with the spans of 54, 73, 166, 73 and 54 meters. The total width of the bridge is 37.2 meters, with the exception of lookout points, where it is 42.5 meters. The main span of the construction across the navigable profile of 150 meters is formed with two steel arcs, each with a span of 166 meters.

Hangers

There are 24 hangers on the bridge, 12 on each arc.

Foundations

The bridge’s columns are resting on piles of various lengths and with a diameter of 1500 mm.

Let us remind that the Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced that the public review of the request for deciding on the necessity of the need for the assessment of the environmental impact of the project of the construction of the new bridge began on July 26.
