The global wine scene is very dynamic. Wineries, traders and marketing agencies carefully monitor the market and try to predict upcoming trends. Of course, some of it inevitably reflects on the Serbian market as well.

Here are five probable wine trends in 2019:

Millennials to take over

Statistics say that, in 2018, millennials have drunk more wine than the generations who came of age in the second half of the 20th century and that this will become even more pronounced in the upcoming period. The fact that around a third of the millennials drink wine each day can't be brushed away. For this reason, marketing agencies advise wineries to modernize the design. Colorful labels and unusual wine names are in vogue. In general, millennials prefer organic and biodynamic wines, so producers should also be ready to offer a larger number of natural wines.

Wine cocktails

A growing demand for wine cocktails, that is, fruit wines mixed with various alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, was recorded this summer as well. No matter how much purists may scoff at this, wine cocktails are here to stay, and certain world brands have already jumped on the bandwagon with their own recipes.

Natural wines

As generations of young consumers are oriented toward healthy and sustainable products, the natural wine segment will continue to grow at an increased pace in 2019. Biodynamic and organic wines are slowly but surely becoming a serious competitor to the mainstream production, which relies on various types of herbicides and fertilizers.

Aging in bourbon barrels

Distilleries have been intensively using old wine barrels, especially port and sherry barrels for around ten years in order to get additional aromas and characteristics. The same is now happening in the opposite direction – winemakers are discovering used whiskey barrels, especially those used for the aging of bourbon, as ideal for the aging of wine. Just like wine cocktails, this is a trend that is likely to last.

Consuming wine at home

It seems like wines will be consumed more and more at home. A strong increase in the sale of wine, both online and in specialized and regular stores, can be expected. This means that there will be more demand for premium wines, which are far more affordable in stores than in restaurants.
