Serbia will get a new state holiday this year, the Cyril and Methodius Day, to be celebrated on May 24, Novosti reports.

The country will thereby join the ranks of other Slavic countries which celebrate and honor the two educators and missionaries, the Belgrade newspaper says.

The Ministry of Culture told Novosti that the new state holiday would not be a non-working day and that the point was to honor Cyril and Methodius due to the importance of their work for all Slavic peoples.

– The idea is not to have a non-working day and to incur expenses that way, but to pay homage to the importance of Saints Cyril and Methodius for all Slavic peoples, including Serbs, on a state level – the Ministry of Culture said.

The initiative to have May 24 pronounced a state holiday dedicated to the Christian missionaries originated with the Ministry of Culture, and the proposition will be officially submitted to the Government by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, which is authorized for filing this type of proposition.
