Russians and Chinese interested in modernization of Belgrade-Nis railway – Documentation completed for around 100 km

Minister of Transport Zorana Mihajlovic stated yesterday that there were negotiations with interested parties which would perform works on the modernization of a 100-km section of the railway from Belgrade to Nis, for which project documentation has been prepared, Tanjug reports.

As she said, Russia’s RZD International, which is already active in the modernization of certain sections in Serbia, is interested, as are the Chinese.

– Three sections have been modernized on Corridor 10. Our current strategic interest is to modernize the railway from Belgrade to Nis. A part of the project-technical documentation has already been prepared, but it is not advisable to start securing the funds before the entirety of the documentation has been prepared – said the minister, who had a talk with her Greek colleague, Christos Spirtzis, yesterday.

Mihajlovic reminded that the funds had been secured and that the project-technical documentation had been prepared for the Belgrade-Budapest railway and that the works would start on November 24, when the 16+1 Summit is supposed to be held in Budapest, Tanjug reports.

The Minister of Transport stated that Serbia and Greece would work together on modernizing the railway corridor to the end of enabling a safer and quicker transport of passengers and goods from Greek ports through Serbia to central European countries, Beta reported.

– The strategic interest of Serbia is to complete the corridor and modernize road and railway transport. It is not enough to have a modernized railway from Belgrade to Budapest, allowing for speeds of up to 200 km/h, but to also have such a railway in the south, in order to be competitive – Mihajlovic said, as reported by Beta.
