Exercise your brain with wine instead of mathematics

We often hear how exercising gray matter is equally as important as physical activity and that it’s therefore useful to solve puzzles, play chess or engage in some other kind of mental activity. However, one of the leading scientists in the field of neurology, Dr Gordon Shepherd, believes that we might achieve better results by drinking wine.

This Yale professor says that the wine tasting process, which entails taking the scent in and slowly drinking the wine, while swishing it in one’s mouth, engages a larger percentage of gray matter than solving mathematical problems or listening to music, The Independent reports.

He claims that the reason for this is that the tongue’s intricate muscles are put to work along with thousands of taste and odor receptors, which further enhances the wine’s complex aroma.

– The taste is not in the wine. The taste is created by the brain of the wine taster – Professor Shepherd explains.

He also points out that, according to him, wine tasters shouldn’t spit out the sip, as swallowing is a key component of the total tasting experience, though he also warns that the other extreme is not desirable either, as being hungover is certainly not helping the brain.
