Portugal to implement sunshine and good view tax

Portugal will impose new charges on owners of houses with a good view and exposure to the sun, by increasing the tax base for them, it was reported by the country`s Official Gazette.

The tax on such houses and apartments will thereby be increased by up to 20%. Up until now, owners of houses and apartments providing a good view and receiving plenty of sunlight had to pay an extra 5%, already a source of great dissatisfaction of the owners and consumer associations.

– The signs are that the next step will be to tax the air we breathe – said National Homeowners’ Association (ANP) President Antonio Frias Marques.

– We are totally against this measure. It’s based on subjective criteria. The view from a home depends on the individual’s perception – said Ernesto Pinto, a tax specialist at the consumers’ association Deco.

On the other hand, owners of houses overlooking a cemetery or an industrial facility will have their property tax reduced by 10%, instead of 5%.

Initially, the increase will only pertain to real estate subject to property tax, and will then be limited to houses costing more than EUR 250,000, as a result of the amendment by the deputies of the Communist Party.

The tax base increase is “based on social justice,” says the Socialist Party spokesman Joao Galamba and emphasizes that it is objectionable that “someone living in a basement and someone living on the top floor with a great view each have to pay exactly the same tax.”
