Shocked Indian officials have scrapped the plan to hire 30 tea pickers after receiving 75,000 job applications, some of which came from highly educated people.
Workers at the Economy and Statistics Directorate of the Indian federal state of Chhattisgarh were left speechless when they saw that applications for a job paid USD 220 a month were coming from so many people.
Amitab Panda, the president of the Directorate, said that the exam for candidates was called off after they had received 70,000 online applications and 5,000 personal ones, including those from qualified engineers and graduate managers.
- This is unreal. We expected between 2,000 and 3,000 applications - said Panda.
Government jobs, even those of the lowest rank, are highly appreciated and desired and, as numerous reports show, candidates often give thousands of rupees as a bribe to get a job.
