Finance and Banking Modernisation in
Central and Southeast Europe

Central and Southeast Europe Regional meeting of financial experts took place at Bulgarian Capital, Sofia this January. The forum highlighted the latest developments in financial markets of the region focusing on economic, financial and technological modernisation.

H.E. Dimitar Ivanovski, Deputy Minister of Finance from Bulgaria welcome addressed the delegates from more than 10 countries.

H.E Dimitar Ivanovski, Deputy Minister of Finance, Ministry of Finance, Bulgaria - spoke about Bulgaria`s Programme for Accession and the role of Ministry of Finance.

He said that successful foundations in membership of European Union for Bulgaria were: dynamic economy, commitment to social justice, consistent economic development, responding to the constantly evolving requirements of international competitiveness.

Governmental panels enabled most valuable exchange of experience in the areas of Economic Reforms and Privatisation of State Owned Companies. Dr Alfred Finz, Secretary of State, Federal Ministry of Finance Austria spoke about Austrian Economic Policy with a special focus on Privatisation Strategy. His Hungarian colleague, Mr Istvan Salgo examined the similar experiences of Hungary.


Ms Anna Suszynska, Deputy Director of Financial Assets and Liabilities Department, Ministry of Finance Poland gave presentation of Polish Economy, Public Finance and Public Debt and provoked highly constructive discussion among the participants.

Republic Government representatives from Serbia and Montenegro spoke about economic reforms in their countries and the steps taken to shorten the accession period.

Insights and perspectives from EU Accession Countries, New Members and EU countries.

Investment Banks Perspective, Private Equity Funding and the role of the National Banks in regional finance reconstruction and modernisation were some of the topics covered by top experts including:

- Mr Emmanouel Maroulakis, Deputy Head of Division, Southeast Europe Department from European Investment Bank
- Mr James Roaf, Resident Representative, International Monetary Fund
- Mr Bryane Michael, Managing Director, Oxford Business Knowledge Ltd
- Mr Valeri Petrov, Executive Director, Global Finance International Ltd
- Mr Tsvetan Manchev, PhD, Deputy Governor, National Bank of Bulgaria
- Mr Bostjan Jazbec, PhD, Member of the Governing Board, Central Bank of Slovenia
