Boris Tadić

President of the Republic of Serbia

Born in Sarajevo on 15 January 1958, President Tadic attended elementary and high school in Belgrade, eventually graduating with a degree in social psychology from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade.

On 27 June 2004, Mr. Tadic was elected the President of the Republic of Serbia.

President Tadic served as Minister of Defence of Serbia and Montenegro from 17 March 2003 until 14 April 2004.

During these 13 months, he demonstrated extraordinary vision, courage and leadership, dramatically overhauling the Defence Ministry, instituting democratic reforms and transforming the military: helping provide Serbia with the necessary tools to meet future challenges at home and abroad.

In particular, he was instrumental in creating a modern, rapid reactionary force under strict civilian control; placing the General Staff directly subordinate to the Ministry of Defence and reorganizing the Ministry and General Staff to be NATO compliant.

President Tadic has previously held numerous political and governmental positions, including the Minister of Telecommunications in the Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Since the beginning of the 80’s he has been fighting for freedom and democracy, which resulted in several arrests by the then communist authorities.

On 22 February 2004, President Tadic was elected the Leader of the Democratic Party. In 2000 and 2001 he was elected Deputy Leader of the Party.

President Tadic also worked as a professor of psychology and clinical psychologist in the army. Until 2003, he was the Professor of Political Advertising at the Faculty of Drama at the University of Belgrade. Additionally, he was the founder and first director of the Centre for Democracy and Political Skills from 1997 to 2002.

President Tadic speaks English and French. He is married and has two daughters.
