The Ministry of Mining and Energy has launched a public procurement procedure for the development of the Geothermal Atlas of the Republic of Serbia, a document that should provide a comprehensive overview of geothermal resources and their potential on the territory of Serbia. The estimated value of the procurement is 17.4 million dinars excluding VAT.
The atlas will cover the entire territory of Serbia, including AP Vojvodina and AP Kosovo and Metohija, and the goal is to consolidate data on existing geothermal phenomena, wells and potential locations for the use of geothermal energy in one place.
According to the project terms of reference, digital thematic maps will be created that will show the density of terrestrial heat flow, geothermal gradients and estimated temperatures at different depths - up to 300 meters, as well as at 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
The atlas will also show areas suitable for different types of geothermal resources, including hydrogeothermal, subgeothermal and petrogeothermal resources, as well as locations with potential for heat and electricity production, cogeneration and production of critical mineral raw materials from geothermal resources.
A separate section will be dedicated to existing geothermal wells in Serbia. They will be classified according to their status into active, conserved and liquidated, with data on their coordinates, geothermal resource temperature and available thermal power.
As part of the atlas, various geological and geophysical substrates will be analyzed, including geological, tectonic and structural maps, gravity and geomagnetic maps, maps of the thickness of the Earth’s crust, neotectonic movements, Neogene magmatism, the depth of the Neogene base and hydrogeological maps.
One of the key tasks will be to assess the sustainability and economic feasibility of potential geothermal projects. Resources will be classified according to the international UNFC-2009 methodology, through the criteria of economic and social sustainability, technical feasibility and the degree of geological exploration.
The Ministry states that the Atlas should become an expert and information basis for planning new geological exploration, preparing investment projects and sustainable management of geothermal resources.
Geothermal energy in Serbia is already used for heating buildings, in spa tourism and balneology, agriculture and other areas, while wider application in the production of heat and electricity is expected.
The final Atlas will be produced in Serbian and English, in digital PDF and GIS format, with an associated database, as well as in a printed edition. It is planned that the working version will be completed no later than 120 days from the signing of the contract, while the final version will be produced no later than 30 days from the adoption of the working version.
