EU gives "green light” to Facebook to acquire WhatsApp

EU anti-monopoly regulators approved to the American social network,Facebook, the acquisition of the message platform, WhatsApp, despite the fact that telecommunications companies which are afraid of the growing power of Americana technology giants were opposing.

EU approved the agreement totaling USD 19 billion ( EUR15 billion) between Facebook and WhatsApp, stating the companies are not direct competitors and that users will still have a large number of applications to choose from.

- We carefully considered the suggested acquisition and concluded that it will not jeopardize competition at dynamic and growing market - Joaquín Almunia, the European commissionaire for competition, said.

In February, Facebook announced the acquisition of WhatsApp which has 600 million people worldwide and the American authorities approved the process in April.
