Overview
Čoka is a town and a municipality in the northeast Vojvodina, between the rivers of Tisa and Zlatica, covering the area of 321 km² and comprising 7 settlements: Čoka, Sanad, Ostojićevo, Padej, Crna Bara, Vrbnica, and Jazovo.
Čoka is 170 km from Belgrade International Airport and 92 km from Novi Sad away.
Population
The Municipality of Čoka has a population of around 13,800, mainly Hungarians and Serbs. As of September 2006, there were 2,000 unemployed persons out of 9,087 persons of working age.
Economy
Having a favorable geographical position and being situated on the crossroads between Senta, Kikinda and Zrenjanin, Čoka’ s economy is growing (food processing industry, agriculture, and oil wells). The Municipality of Čoka is also well-known for its vineyards and viniculture and famous Čoka wine sellers.
The Austrian company ATB Sever has its manufacturing facilities in this municipality.
Infrastructure
The Municipality of Čoka is located in the area bordering Hungary (30 km from the border crossing and around 22 km from the state border). A network of principal and local roads intersects the municipality, which is 45 km off the international E 75 motorway. The municipality is also intersected by the river Tisa and the DTD system canal network (navigable canals, irrigation, and tourism).
Tourism
In the vicinity of Čoka there are several small lakes: Stara or Mrtva Tisa, and Jama. There is also a large fishpond belonging to the DTD Water Management Company, and a modern pheasant farm. They all make the municipality attractive for the development of hunting and fishing tourism, but also vineyard and winery tourism, which is being developed in Vojvodina.
