UNDP sets aside USD 1,5 mil for flooded areas in Serbia

Representatives of the Government of Serbia and UNDP have signed today an agreement on providing supporting services for rehabilitation of flooded areas totaling USD 1,5m.

Vice President of the Government of Serbia, Kori Udovicki, head of the Office for support and rehabilitation of flooded areas, Marko Blagojevic and UNPD Head for Serbia, Irena Vojackova Solorano, signed the project.

UNDP is fully in charge of the project implementation and it refers to providing services of collection, cleaning and waste disposal as well as to setting up the catastrophe risk reduction decrease.

- The agreement arrived just in time when the focus of all our efforts is to finish solving the issues for families left without their homes, maintenance of their space and normalization for life – Udovicki said.

Udovicki, who is also the minister of the governmental administration and local self-governance, explained that the project refers to cleaning of locations where new facilities should be built as well as to collected waste recycling.

According to her, out of the total amount, a million dollars will set aside for waste removal and sorting while the remaining USD 500.000 will be used for technical and expert support in analysis and recommendations for development of legislation framework which governs actions in case of elementary accidents.

Marko Blagojevic reminded that at the moment when Serbia was suffering floods consequences, there was no system which could respond to all people’s needs but the Office was set up in May.

- We had to start from zero. We made many mistakes and learnt a lot but the problem is that the rehabilitations started much later than we all wanted and now we want it never happens again – Blagojevic said.
