After this announcement, Philip Morris said it would also close its plant in the Netherlands and close 1,230 job positions due to a huge sales decrease. However, most of the cigarettes produced at this Bergen-based plant are exported to Europe and Japan. As it was stated in the company announcement, over the last four years the sales have gone down by 20%, which is to blame on the financial crisis as well as the fact that more people smokes cheaper cigarettes and uses rolling tobacco.
As the daily Blic was confirmed by the officials of Nis-based Philip Morris which employs more than 1,000 people, decisions on closing down some sections cannot in any way relate to the operations of this multinational company in Serbia.
Philip Morris bought Nis-based DIN in 2003.
