Serbian Railways today kicked off the modernization of the Belgrade-Pancevo railroad, which is financed with proceeds of a Russian loan of USD 800 million.

At a ceremony marking the commencement of works in Pancevo, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said that the project valued at about USD 105 million was the first step in the modernization of Serbian railways, adding that the project implementation was entrusted to RZD International.

Aforementioned ceremony was also attended by Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, Serbian and Russian transportation ministers Aleksandar Antic and Maksim Sokolov, President of the Russian railway company Vladimir Yakunin, Serbian Railways CEO Dragoljub Simonovic, and Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Chepurin.

A portion of the work on this railroad will be carried out by Energoprojekt Niskogradnja that signed a subcontractor agreement with RZD International - Ogranak Beograd as the contractor to build the second railway track between Belgrade and Pancevo.
