Gas pipeline "Plavi potok" brought up issue of construction of gas power plant in Serbia

The agreement between the Government of Serbia and "Gazprom" about construction of gas pipeline "Plavi potok" across the territory of Serbia has, once again, brought up the issue of construction of gas power plant on this area. Construction of a gas power plant is closely related to the construction of the new branch of main gas pipeline - from Dimitrovgrad, that is, from Bulgarian border, towards Niš.
Construction of that branch has been brought in the connection with the Directive of European Union about interregional cooperation, that is, about regional electricity market in Southeast Europe. The experts estimate that the development of gas infrastructure in Serbia is not possible without foreign investments in amount of 5-7 billion USD. It is possible that there will be space for construction of a gas steam power plant.
There are no administrative obstacles for the construction of one such facility, because the Law on Energy stipulates that, in addition to Electric Power Company of Serbia, other investors can also have power plants built in Serbia. Radomir Naumov, the REpublic Minister of Mining and Energy is of the opinion that, due to abrupt economic development of Serbia and due to electricity consumption growth, the construction of a gas power plant is inevitable.
