Online in the air - FlyNet in Lufthansa aircraft

More than 90% of all Lufthansa long-haul aircraft are already fitted out with the first on-board broadband Internet service called Lufthansa FlyNet.

Passengers flying with this German carrier can enjoy the full communications freedom of the Internet on almost the entire Lufthansa global long-haul network. The sole exceptions are flights over China — the system automatically switches off on entering Chinese airspace and switches on again when leaving it — and flights to Cape Town due to insufficient satellite capacity available.

Fast and powerful online access above the cloud gives passengers Internet access on their WLAN-enabled laptop or smartphone in all travel classes. Thanks to the high transmission speed, they can send and receive e-mails without delay, even with big file attachments.

FlyNet now also makes it possible for passengers to transfer data by GSM and GPRS technology too. So once cruising altitude is reached, they will be able to use their mobile phone to, for example, send and receive SMS and MMS messages or to synchronise data via their smartphone.

The option of making mobile phone calls has been disabled, and so is Internet telephony (VOIP).

After opening their browser, passengers will connect automatically to the free Lufthansa FlyNet portal where they will find the latest business, political, sports and entertainment news as well as access to the billable Internet service.

It is possible to buy an one-hour Internet pass for EUR 10.95 or a 24-hour pass for EUR 19.95.
