The Monetary Board of NBS has lowered the referential interest rate by additional 1%, from 16.5% to 15.5% on an annual level, and evaluated that there was the possibility of the base inflation being below 7% at the end of this year.

It is the third decrease in referential interest rate, as the main instrument of monetary regulation, in 2006, keeping in mind that NBS had previously corrected that rate in November in two instances, first to 18% and then to 17.5%.

The Monetary Board stated that NBS had intervened in November 2006 with the procurement of foreign currency at the meeting of the Interbanking foreign currency market, concerning the fact that the scope of net purchase of foreign currencies by NBS amounted to 259.4m EUR.
