The majority owner of sugar plant in Nova Crnja, Italian company "Sfir", decided to close that factory.

This autumn, the lime furnace was not lightened in Nova Crnja-based sugar plant due to insufficient quantity of raw materials. Instead of planned 17,000, the harvest of sugar beet was carried out last spring on 14,600 ha on the raw material territory of the factory in Nova Crnja, so that that crop was refined by the sugar plant in Senta, which is also property of Italian company "Sfir".

Four years ago, company "Sfir" bought 100% of the assets of factory in Nova Crnja for about 3.15m EUR and 58% of ownership in sugar plant in Senta for 3.5m EUR. More than 100 workers lost their jobs after the closing of the factory in Nova Crnja.

The other sugar factory in Banat, the one in Zrenjanin, is also in difficult situation. The sugar beet has not been refined in this factory for two years and the debts of the factory amount to about 600m RSD.
