A robot collecting strawberries while the farmers are sleeping has been presented in Japan, and its creator says it can decrease the amount of work for 2/3.
The device, that can pick one piece of fruit every 8 seconds, is using three cameras to evaluate which fruit if ready to be collected before it reaches with its hand, picks it and throws it into the basket, according to France Press Agency.
The robot moves between the lines of strawberries, which are grown in Japan usually on lifted platforms in greenhouses. Based on the color of a strawberry it determines the maturity of the fruit, says Micutaka Kurita, the official from the company 'Shibuya Seiki', which manufactured this robot.
Growing strawberries demands lot of work, even 70 times more than rice breeding and double more than tomato and cucumber growing, says Japanese Organization for Agriculture and Food.
- This robot can pick 2/3 of strawberries over night while the farmers are sleeping, and later they can pick the rest., says Kurita.
The robot will be ready for sale at the beginning of the next year by the price of around 5 million yens (50.000 USD). In Japan strawberries are grown over entire year, and one basket costs FROM 500 yens (5,07 USD) and more.
