Easy Group, owned by British businessman originating from Cyprus, Stelios Haji Ioannou, plans to open EasyFoodstore supermarket chain, it was announced on the recently launched website easyfoodstore.com.
The first "pilot" supermarket is planned to be opened on the ground floor of a 20-storey building in London's neighborhood Croydon. The building that completely belongs to Easy Group, which also operates the low-cost airline EasyJet, will comprise a restaurant and a gym, while two floors will feature office space for rent, the media reported.
EasyFoodstore is expected to compete with the likes of Aldi and Lidl, so-called hard discounters.
They set the minimum price for goods and make savings by reducing the space in use, range of products and the number of employees. In addition, hard discounters mainly sell products under their own trademark.
