This year's coal production in pit mines will be 15 percent larger than last year. The Serbian government has announced that a plan for the recovery of mines operated by the Resavica public company will be published mid-May, adding that there is also a possibility of opening new mines.

Since the beginning of this year, eight working groups have been exploring about 10 prospective coal deposits across Serbia. Three of them are the most promising: Stavalj near Sjenica, the Despotovac area, and Cirikovac near Kostolac.

Resavica CEO Vladan Milosevic says that these prospective mines could produce between 500,000 and 1 million tonnes of coal.

- That would greatly improve the business results of underground mining - says Milosevic.
