Volvo invents bicycle detection system

Volvo has introduced a new safety system that detects bicyclists as they bolt in front of the car and automatically applies the car's brakes to avoid hitting them.

The system works with a sensor that scans ahead. Volvo says it works like this: "If a cyclist heading in the same direction as the car suddenly swerves out in front of the car as it approaches from behind and a collision is imminent, there is an instant warning and full braking power is applied."

Volvo's introduction came at the Geneva Motor Show where Doug Speck, a senior vice president, came bicycling out on the stage at the show for the introduction.

Volvo says the new abilities are an enhancement of Volvo's automatic braking technology. The ability to avoid hitting cyclists will be added to a system aimed at avoiding accidents with pedestrians.

"As the leader in automotive safety, we have been first in the industry with all detection and auto brake technologies, from the first-generation brake support in 2006 to pedestrian detection with full auto brake in 2010," says Speck.
