Seven percent of Serbian corn infected

All corn products available in Serbia are safe, and it won't be allowed that the infected seven percent find their way to the citizens, Head of the Agriculture Inspection Authority Nenad Katanic said today.

He noted at a press conference at the Ministry of Agriculture that the samples taken from the state reserves, fodder plants and polenta producers had shown that seven percent of corn in Serbia was infected with aflatoxin.

As Katanic stressed, appropriate measures will be taken at all silos where infected corn is discovered to prevent such corn from being sent to processing units without reducing the percentage of aflatoxin to a safe level beforehand.

Katanic said that the corn samples had been tested in laboratories in Becej and Belgrade.

Danilo Golubovic, state secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, underlined that all available corn products were safe, announcing that the Ministry would take measures against all those spreading the unfounded information that a large quantity of corn was infected.

Golubovic added that milk too was safe for human consumption.

As it was announced today, a portion of crop yield in Hungary is also infected with aflatoxin.
