Edin Dzeko gets dedicated tram line: Route 11 begins service in Sarajevo

On Sunday, the inaugural run took place on the new tram line connecting Hrasnica and Bascarsija. The line has been designated Number 11 in honor of Edin Dzeko, the captain of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

The first tram departed at 5:30 AM, following the completion of technical inspections and the issuance of all necessary permits to open the line.

As previously announced by the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Transport, the construction of the tram line to Hrasnica represents the largest transport infrastructure project since the Olympics. A total of 12.9 kilometers of tram track was built in both directions, marking the first expansion of the Sarajevo tram network since 1962.

The project encompassed more than just the construction of the tram tracks. Tram stops and two electric traction substations were built and equipped, 251 overhead contact line poles, the contact network itself, and new traffic signaling systems were installed and extensive underground infrastructure work was carried out.

Among other things, the sanitary and storm sewer collectors were relocated, an integrated drainage solution for the road and tracks was implemented, and numerous underground utility lines that conflicted with the new track route were moved.

Bus lines currently operating from within the Hrasnica, Butmir, Sokolovic Kolonija, and Kovaci neighborhoods to Ilidza will continue to run according to their existing schedules, which can be found on the GRAS website and app.

The Hrasnica-Bascarsija bus line will also remain in operation to allow for monitoring of conditions on the ground and passenger needs, as well as adjustment to the new public transport system.

The project investor is the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Transport, the contractor is a consortium of the Turkish companies Yapi Merkezi Insaat ve Sanayi A.S. and Yapiray Demiryolu Insaat Sistemleri Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., and project supervision was carried out by a consortium comprising Yuksel Proje, PPG d.o.o., and Saraj Inzenjering d.o.o.
