Starlink granted permit for BiH market – Satellite internet available in a few weeks

Bosnia and Herzegovina will soon become part of the global Starlink network, and SpaceX’s satellite internet service is expected to be available to citizens within the next few weeks, announced Edin Forto, Minister of Communications and Transport in the Council of Ministers.

“Hardly a week goes by without me being asked when Starlink will finally arrive in BiH. Today, we can finally say that Starlink’s service will be available in the coming weeks,” said Forto.

On September 28 in Sarajevo, Forto met with Rebecca Slick Hunter, Starlink’s Director of Global Licensing and Market Activation, to discuss the launch of the company’s services in BiH and next steps for the local market, the Ministry of Communications and Transport announced.

He noted that this technology would be significant for residents in areas where traditional infrastructure could not provide a high-quality internet connection, as well as for schools, healthcare facilities, and other users.

Starlink provides broadband internet via a network of low-Earth orbit satellites, eliminating the need for traditional cable infrastructure reaching the user, a feature that can be particularly important for rural, mountainous, and other hard-to-reach areas.

Starlink’s arrival will introduce a new service provider to the BiH internet market, offering additional choices for citizens and businesses, as well as enabling the use of satellite connectivity in education, healthcare, business operations, and emergency communications. Hunter expressed satisfaction that BiH would be included in the growing Starlink network, noting that the company’s goal was to provide reliable and high-speed connectivity regardless of where users lived.

Starlink registered a legal entity, Starlink BH, in BiH and, on May 22, submitted an application to the Communications Regulatory Agency (RAK) of BiH to provide internet access services and obtain an operating license. The licensing process has been underway since then.

The meeting follows up on discussions held last year in Washington between Forto and Hunter, during which the prospect of Starlink entering the BiH market was first raised.
