Cadez: Sovereign cloud key to secure AI implementation and business competitiveness

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia (CCIS) hosted the “Serbia Cloud Conference – Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure” event in Belgrade.

At the opening, CCIS President Marko Cadez emphasized that “without alignment with the European Union’s legal framework, EU accession is out of the question, and sovereign cloud technology serves as the foundation for the secure implementation of artificial intelligence.”

According to the CCIS, Cadez stated that sovereign cloud was not merely a data storage location but also a foundation for the secure and controlled introduction of AI-based solutions.

– Serbia is working on aligning its cloud infrastructure with EU regulations. A new Law on Information Security has been adopted, we have a state data center and supercomputers, and we are at the beginning of the regulatory process – Cadez said, noting that cloud infrastructure was an issue affecting the entire business sector.

He emphasized that “the public sector has already migrated its data to the sovereign cloud, while a major migration awaits the business sector.”

– Our role is to act as a bridge in this migration, to help companies translate regulations into business terms, to try to influence future regulations, and to ensure our firms can remain competitive on the European market – the CCIS President said.

Oliver Blind-Galties, Vice President of the Frankfurt-based company Nextcloud GmbH, highlighted the importance of digital sovereignty, defined as the level of control an institution, organization, state, or individual exercises over the data they collect, store, and process, whether located on local servers or in the cloud.

– Our position is that digital sovereignty can only be achieved through the use of open-source software on independent infrastructure managed by European organizations – he said.

The conference brought together representatives from government institutions, regulatory bodies, academia, and the business sector to discuss sovereign cloud infrastructure within Serbia’s regulated sectors, as well as the EU cloud regulatory framework as a means of strengthening the competitive advantage of Serbian IT companies.

Cloud infrastructure comprises the collection of hardware and software resources that enable the delivery of computing services over the Internet.

Instead of purchasing, installing, and maintaining their own physical servers and equipment on-site, companies or individuals lease these resources from a provider.
