Sokobanja no longer to have first-category tourist destination status – Aiming to reduce costs for hospitality providers

The Municipality of Sokobanja has decided not to pursue a renewal of its first-category tourist destination status, following the expiration on September 12, 2026, of the official decree granting that classification.

This decision follows discussions among representatives of the local government, the Sokobanja Tourist Organization, private accommodation hosts, and hoteliers, all of whom highlighted the need to lower financial obligations and create a more favorable business environment.

The change in tourist destination status will result in tangible cost reductions for accommodation providers. The annual tourist tax for individuals offering private accommodation services will drop from the current 3,300 dinars to 1,300 dinars per bed.

Furthermore, according to the Municipality of Sokobanja, the tax liabilities of accommodation providers will be reduced by approximately 50 percent.

Local officials emphasize that the decision was made to address the requests of hospitality providers, hosts, and hoteliers, and to alleviate their financial burden.

The municipality stresses that the change in tourist destination category does not imply that Sokobanja fails to meet tourism standards, nor does it mean the town has lost its status as a significant tourist destination in Serbia.

As stated in the official announcement, this is an administrative decision prioritizing the reduction of financial obligations for local accommodation providers.
