Belgrade a step closer to geothermal heating – Tender launched for exploratory wells at two locations

The public utility company Beogradske elektrane (Belgrade Power Plants) has taken a new step toward introducing an environmentally cleaner district heating system by launching a tender for the third phase of a scientific study on the geothermal potential of groundwater resources.

This phase marks the transition from theoretical models to practical fieldwork. The selected contractor’s primary task will be to verify the established models through exploratory drilling at two city locations - the New Belgrade Heating Plant and the Miljakovac Heating Plant.

After the first two phases of research identified these locations as the most energetically and economically viable, the new phase requires drilling operations to precisely determine the actual temperature and volume of the geothermal waters lying beneath the capital.

According to the tender documentation, rigorous scientific monitoring will be conducted at the sites. This includes measuring temperature and the geothermal gradient every 50 meters of depth, continuously monitoring the thermal and physical characteristics of the rock, and performing detailed laboratory analyses, including petrological and paleontological studies of Mesozoic and Neogene rocks, to precisely define the geological structure of the terrain. Indirect indicators, such as the appearance of gases and changes in drilling fluid, will also be monitored, serving as a first line of detection for groundwater inflow.

The development plans of Beogradske elektrane are focused on the long-term stability of the heating and cooling system. Drawing on the extensive experience of European Union countries, the integration of geothermal energy is expected, as stated, to enhance energy security and mitigate the sharp price spikes and volatility of fossil fuels on the global market.

Beyond its economic viability, the project holds immense environmental significance, as it directly contributes to reducing harmful gas emissions in the capital city.
