Vinca facility processes one million tons of waste and generates 455,213 MWh of electricity in five years

The Waste Management Center in Vinca has thermally treated one million tons of municipal waste to date, generating 455,213 MWh of electricity and 293,172 MWh of thermal energy, the company Beo Cista Energija announced.

Between August 2021 and August 2026, the Center received over three million tons of non-hazardous municipal waste. Of this total, one million tons were diverted from the landfill and utilized for energy production at the waste-to-energy facility.

According to the company, the facility’s operations are monitored continuously, 24 hours a day, via an automated Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS). Emission monitoring results are published on the Beo Cista Energija website.

Vladimir Milovanovic, Director of Beo Cista Energija, stated that the first million tons of thermally treated waste mark a shift in Belgrade’s waste management approach, specifically, a transition from simple waste disposal to energy recovery.

The waste-to-energy facility is part of a public-private partnership between the City of Belgrade and Beo Cista Energija, a company established by Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation, France’s Veolia, and the pan-European infrastructure fund Marguerite, based in Luxembourg.

The company notes that reaching the milestone of one million tons of thermally treated waste represents a tangible result of this partnership and a key component in developing a waste management system for Belgrade that incorporates energy recovery.
