New bridge near Golubac? – Initiative signed by multiple Serbian and Romanian municipalities, land registration process for route also launched

Although they are constantly within sight of one another, Serbs and Romanians living in the Golubac Bay and the Djerdap Gorge area can only meet their neighbors by taking a ferry from Usje, and even then, only on weekends, weather permitting, or by traveling 120 kilometers in either direction to the nearest bridges. Consequently, they have launched an initiative to build a bridge of their own at a point where the Danube is only 370 meters wide.

The initiative has already been signed by sixteen municipalities across two Romanian counties and eleven municipalities across three Serbian districts, and the new bridge between Serbia and Romania could also serve as an extension of the planned bypass around Golubac.

– The area serves a population of 800,000 to one million people, and the project is vital for regional development, tourism, and economic growth, as the movement of goods, people, and capital brings prosperity – notes Nebojsa Mijovic, Mayor of Golubac.

Given the strong desire among these small municipalities to see the project through, an interstate agreement is required, and representatives have already informed their respective prime ministers and relevant ministries of the plan.

– We have already initiated steps to register the land in our area where the bridge is intended to be built, and we stand ready to assist the authorities in both our country and yours – emphasizes the president of the Municipality of Coronini.

This bridge may be much more significant for Romanian citizens than for Serbs, because, on our side, primarily, they have much better roads. That way, with the new bridge, the travel time to Vidin or Sofia would be reduced by at least an hour and a half. And most importantly, instead of 240 kilometers, the residents of Coronini and Golubac could meet within less than a kilometer.
