Serbian travelers should be on the lookout for cyber threats while in Greece, Kaspersky warns

As Greece continues to be one of the favorite destinations for travelers from Serbia, Kaspersky researchers warn about the importance of digital security when traveling abroad.

According to Kaspersky, tourists visiting Greece may be exposed to various cyber risks, including threats targeting their online activities.

To enable travelers to explore the world with more security and confidence, Kaspersky is introducing the Safe Travel Insights – a project that combines the company’s cybersecurity expertise with the local knowledge of its international team.

The project provides practical tips for safe internet use while traveling, as well as authentic recommendations on destinations, gastronomy, experiences and places worth visiting in more than 20 countries.

Cyber threats targeting tourists in Greece

According to Kaspersky, between Q3 2025 and Q2 2026, users in Greece encountered a variety of cyber threats that can also affect travelers, including:

● 8,372,801 general online threats – malicious websites and other online risks that users may encounter when searching for travel information, booking services or using public networks;

● 665,560 detections of password-stealing malware – threats designed to collect user credentials from web browsers, applications and user accounts;

● 396,485 detections of spyware – malicious software that can track user activities and access sensitive data;

● 817,728 detections of backdoor malware – threats that can give attackers unauthorized access to infected devices.

Experts highlight key cyber risks for tourists in Greece

Tourists should pay particular attention to smishing (SMS phishing) scams in which attackers falsely pose as government authorities.

Since foreign visitors are often unfamiliar with how Greek government institutions typically communicate with citizens, they are more likely to believe a message purporting to explain a local fee, tax, or administrative obligation.

Tourists should also be aware of reservation hijacking.

Given Greece’s heavy reliance on hotels, villas, island and seasonal accommodation, this type of scam poses a real threat to travelers.

The scam usually begins with a message containing actual booking details and asks travelers to provide additional payment confirmation, provide guest details or make a payment outside of the official booking system.

Such requests often come just before arrival, when travelers fear they may lose their booked accommodation.

During the tourist season, accommodation in popular destinations is expensive and difficult to find, which gives scammers an added advantage as victims often react hastily to avoid being left without a reservation that is difficult to replace.

Nothing can ruin a great travel experience like a cyberattack. Rade Furtula, Presales Manager for Eastern Europe at Kaspersky, highlights some of the most important threats travelers should be aware of in order to enjoy their trip without worries.

– When traveling, people are naturally focused on discovering new places, not cybersecurity. That is why tourists are an attractive target for cybercriminals – they use unfamiliar digital services, connect from new locations and often make quick decisions.

Our research shows that cybercriminals actively exploit such circumstances. By understanding the most significant threats in each destination, travelers can take simple steps to protect their data and travel with more security and confidence – said Rade Furtula.

The project also highlights the digital threats that travelers may encounter in different destinations - from travel-related phishing scams and fraudulent payment requests, to the risks of using unprotected public Wi-Fi networks - and offers practical advice for safely planning, booking and carrying out their trips.

To help travelers from Serbia avoid travel-related scams, Kaspersky advises:

• Do not use links in unexpected SMS messages asking you to settle alleged tax or administrative obligations. Instead, find the official website of the relevant institution yourself or contact the hotel, travel agency or bank before entering any details.

Kaspersky Premium provides an additional layer of protection by detecting phishing links and fake websites before you share sensitive information.

• Make reservations only through official websites or apps. Avoid booking or confirmation links that arrive via email, SMS or social media – instead, go directly to the airline website, booking platform or other service.

• Verify any request for payment or guest details through the original channel through which the booking was made. If the message asks for payment via an external link, bank transfer or payment card details via a chat app, end the communication and contact the accommodation directly using a trusted phone number.

Kaspersky Premium can help identify fraudulent payment pages and phishing sites.

• Carefully check the URL before entering payment details. Phishing pages that impersonate airlines, carriers or booking platforms often use domains that look almost identical to the real thing at first glance.

• Be careful with offers that seem “too good to be true,” especially if they require an immediate response or unusual payment methods, such as bank transfers or gift cards.

• Use strong and unique passwords for travel and transport-related accounts and, where possible, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).

• Only download travel and transportation apps from official app stores, checking user ratings and the permissions the app requires.

• After booking, regularly check your bank and credit card statements and immediately report any transactions you don’t recognize.

• Scan QR codes only from trusted and verified sources. Carefully check the web address and payment details before proceeding, and only download apps or files if you are sure of their authenticity.

The Secure QR Scanner feature in Kaspersky Premium checks the links contained in QR codes and warns the user if they lead to a malicious or phishing website.

• Kaspersky Premium uses artificial intelligence-based fraud protection to identify phishing sites and fake payment pages before the user enters sensitive data. The solution combines machine learning, real-time threat monitoring, and identity theft checks.
