Drones to control traffic in Serbia – Introduction planned within next year

Serbia could introduce drones in traffic control within the next year, but this will depend on procurement and other factors. However, the idea is that in a year, drones will become a reinforcement in modern technology, and in relation to traffic control, announced the head of the Traffic Police Directorate, Slavisa Lakicevic, adding that cameras and radars have long been allies of the police in traffic control, and that drones are now also being included.

– This is something that we will probably look into and try out. Most drones function by taking pictures and taking photographs of risky actions in traffic, such as overtaking on a full line, crossing the street outside a pedestrian crossing or at a red light, and the like – he said in an interview with the daily Politika.

As he said, in some countries, on-site investigations are carried out using drones, because in this way the time for conducting the static and dynamic phases of the on-site investigation is shortened.

He also pointed out that the new Law on Road Traffic Safety will bring stricter sanctions for the most serious violations, because it is necessary for the penal policy to be proportionate to the risk that such drivers pose to the lives of other road users.

– No one who grossly violates regulations, drives under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances, repeatedly exceeds the speed limit or otherwise endangers traffic safety should expect lenient treatment. However, practice often shows us that repression alone is not enough – Lakicevic pointed out.

According to him, the grim statistics directly influenced the new Law on Road Traffic Safety, which will be completed in September this year. As he pointed out, the authorities have considered restrictions regarding speed and driving time, which, as he announced, will be subject to changes when it comes to drivers with probationary licenses.

The idea is to reduce the driving restrictions, which will most likely be from midnight to five in the morning instead of from 11 pm to six in the morning, as it is today. It is also expected that instead of a probationary driver’s license, which is not recognized abroad, young drivers will have a “classic” driver’s license form, with a special indication that they are a beginner.
